INSIDE LOOKING (INSTRUMENTAL METAL)
ROCK INST. (GUITAR)
‘Inside’ is the latest album from one of the leading players on the USA new rock guitar scene. It is a strong 2nd solo release, and again it is notable in particular for its attention to real melodic arrangements. With its 14 fine tracks, it clocks up a mighty fifty-minutes of heavy metal guitar playing that is not clichéd in any way – Rock instrumentals full of feeling and atmosphere that rock with the best of them, featuring a variety of smokin' lead guitar work that's solid, melodic and never flashy or self-indulgent. There are also some more delicate acoustic passages, bluesy bits and some electric tracks that really blow you away when the trio really turn up the power levels. Very few of the guitarists in this genre have produced as consistent a melodic and powerful mix of electric and acoustic guitar work as this – A fantastic and well worthy successor to his strong and consistent debut album.
The opening couple of tracks alone illustrate the sheer class of the music that is on this CD, with an urgent rhythm section, red-hot electric guitar work and tunes that are varied, consistent, and the sort that you really will choose to play over and over again. His maturity of playing and composing is furthered on tracks like ‘Russian Winter’ where massed acoustic guitars become the central feature, and indeed this track is another truly excellent melodic composition with crisp and vibrant with guitar layers that fly off into the distance as the tune drives ahead. This track is also - a lot more punchy than the usual obligatory acoustic guitar track on albums such as this. Track 4 is ‘Nile Of Orion’, a short piece of sustained electric guitar layering, leading into ‘Desert Caravan’, a track that begins with pounding bass and sonorous drums, before moving into thick-toned layers of electric guitar that cruise effortlessly, gliding while the rhythms roll. This piece is heavy without being clichéd metal, full of feeling and atmosphere, yet it rocks like most of the other electric tracks on the album. The rest of the 14 tracks range from one short, more delicate acoustic track, a bluesy acoustic track (that's just superb), and towards the end of the CD there are some electric tracks that will have you jaw-dropped in amazement, as the trio really cook and turn up the heat.
