BACK WHEN I WAS SANE (INSTRUMENTAL METAL)

ROCK INST. (GUITAR)

This is an album of strong melodies as well as powerhouse instrumental guitar playing. You will hear some truly fine guitar work on this 9 track CD from Randy Pevler on various guitars and Donny Sarian on drums. There is a strong sense of tunes and melodic purpose present throughout, but nothing in what you might call the sweet or commercial vein. There is plenty power and dynamics too, with all the tracks lasting long enough to give you maximum enjoyment, but not so long as to outstay their welcome at any time. Simply, this is a thoroughly consistent CD that you would do well to investigate.

The first thing that hits you about the opening 2 tracks (‘N.F.L’ & ‘Phoenix’) is the fact that they are not only powerful instrumental work-outs with some really hot electric guitar work, but that there are real tunes in evidence, and that is a fact which makes them stand out so well against most other rock guitar albums. Track 3 is ‘Daze Gone By’, a delicate and rhythmic acoustic Leo Kottke-style outing, again with great melodic content. Track 4 has a Hendrix feel to it (entitled ‘Xcendrix’), with a dynamic rhythm and some well constructed multi-tracked electric guitars. It has a really high-flying bluesy passage where crystal clear chords unfold against the main guitar canvas, giving a melodic addition to the power on a very addictive piece of music. Track 5 is ‘Thump’, more rampant metal roller-coaster stuff with the guitar taking off, while ‘Big Breasted Bop’ slows the pace down fro track 6. Over a more varied rhythm backing layers of guitar riffs and lead wah-wah guitar, the piece drives on with a melodic, forceful and powerful guitar work. Track 7 is ‘Huns Song’ and it returns to an acoustic mood for a short, but purposeful track played with great expression. The 8th track is ‘Fade To Blue’, a really bluesy workout with a mix of stinging and chiming electric guitars working over each other, with a slow, but purposeful rhythm section holding it all together. Finally ‘Randy’s Romp’ ends the 9-track album on a rampaging note, as power chords and riffs build and layer to maximum intensity over a galloping rhythm section.
